Built for fairness & accessibility

Octcoin is designed from the ground up to be accessible to everyone — CPU miners, node operators, and everyday users.

⚙️

CPU-Native Mining

SHA-512 uses 64-bit word operations natively optimized for modern CPUs. Anyone with a standard computer can mine competitively.

⚖️

Fair Launch

Zero premine. No ICO. No developer tax. Source code published before launch. Every coin is earned through proof-of-work.

🔒

GPU Resistant

Memory-hard scratchpad layer on top of SHA-512 makes GPU mining inefficient, keeping the playing field level for CPU miners.

🌐

Decentralized

Fully peer-to-peer network with no central authority. Anyone can run a full node and participate in consensus.

💼

Full-Featured Wallet

Desktop GUI wallet for Windows and Linux. Built-in CPU miner, full SegWit support, and Bech32 addresses from genesis.

📖

Open Source

Fully open source under the MIT license. Based on Bitcoin Core 30.0. Auditable, forkable, and community-governed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Octcoin.

What is Octcoin? +
Octcoin (OCT) is a decentralized peer-to-peer digital currency using SHA-512 proof-of-work. It was designed for CPU accessibility and fair distribution — no premine, no ICO, no developer allocation.
Was there a premine? +
Absolutely not. Octcoin had a 100% fair launch. The full source code was published on GitHub before the network launched. The genesis block contains only the standard 50 OCT coinbase reward. Every OCT in existence was mined through proof-of-work.
Why SHA-512 instead of SHA-256? +
SHA-512 uses 64-bit word operations throughout its compression function. On modern 64-bit CPUs, it runs as fast as SHA-256. However, implementing SHA-512 in an ASIC requires emulating 64-bit operations, approximately doubling gate count compared to SHA-256 ASICs. This structural advantage preserves CPU competitiveness.
What is the total supply and block reward? +
The total supply is permanently capped at 21,000,000 OCT. The initial block reward is 50 OCT, halving every 210,000 blocks (~4 years), identical to Bitcoin's schedule.
How do I mine Octcoin? +
Download Octcoin Core, create a wallet address, then use the built-in CPU miner in the GUI under the Mining tab. Enter your receiving address and the number of CPU threads to use. No specialized hardware required.
Where is the source code? +
The full source code is available on GitHub at github.com/octcoins/octcoin under the MIT license. Based on Bitcoin Core 30.0.
